Everything you need to know...
How to Measure for Your Kilt
To ensure the perfect fit, follow these steps to measure yourself for a kilt:
- Waist Measurement: Measure around your natural waistline, typically just above your navel or at the narrowest part of your torso. This is where the kilt will sit.
- Hip Measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, typically the widest part of your bottom. Make sure the measuring tape is level all the way around as you do this.
- Length: While wearing shoes, measure from your natural waistline down to the middle of your kneecap. This determines the proper length of your kilt.
For best results, use a flexible tape measure and stand naturally. If you're between sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size for comfort.
Remember, a well-fitted kilt should sit at your natural waist and fall to the middle of your kneecap. If you have any questions about sizing, don't hesitate to contact our customer service team.
Choosing Your Tartan
Selecting the right tartan is a personal journey that connects you to your Scottish heritage.
Here's how to choose:
- Family Connection: If you have Scottish ancestry, start by looking up your family name or clan tartan. Many clans have multiple tartans, including ancient, modern, and hunting variants.
- Regional Tartans: If you have a connection to a specific area of Scotland, consider choosing a district tartan associated with that region.
- Universal Tartans: Don't have a Scottish connection? No problem! Some tartans like Black Watch, Caledonian, or Flower of Scotland are open for anyone to wear.
- Color Preference: If tradition isn't a priority, feel free to choose a tartan based on colors you like or that complement your wardrobe.
- Occasion: Consider different tartans for various occasions. Hunting tartans with earth tones are great for casual wear, while dress tartans are perfect for formal events.
- Rarity: Some customers prefer unique, lesser-known tartans to stand out from the crowd*
Remember, there are no strict rules about who can wear which tartan. The most important thing is that you feel a connection to your choice.
Not sure where to start? Our team would be happy to guide you through our tartan options and help you find the perfect match for your kilt.

Kilt Pleating Styles
Kilts can be pleated to what is known as "The Sett" or "The Stripe".
- Pleating to the sett: This method aligns the pleats to match the overall pattern (sett) of the tartan. It creates a consistent appearance across the back of the kilt, with the full tartan design visible when the pleats are closed.
- Pleating to the stripe: This technique focuses on aligning a specific vertical stripe of the tartan along each pleat. It results in a more regimented look, with the chosen stripe prominently displayed when the pleats are closed.
The main difference lies in the visual effect: pleating to the sett showcases the entire tartan pattern, while pleating to the stripe emphasises a particular line within the design.
